The great filter makes the most sense to me, with the size of the galaxy being the next logical conclusion, and that ties in with the rare earth theory. If you think about it, there's a ton of hurdles life had to go through to get to me typing this comment on the internet. The earth itself, is also very unique, via its distance from the sun, it's magnetic field strength, it's tidal and large moon, a planet such as Jupiter protecting from asteroids, it's plate tectonics, its thick atmosphere, it's age, its location in the milky way, etc. There's a lot of merit in the rare earth argument, but that doesn't mean statistically it can't happen again.

I've come to hear of the early bird theory more recently than the others and it equally scared and mesmerized me like currently there's no reason to think that the universe shall meet any end other than the Heat Death in some billions of billions of years further and currently the universe is only less than 15 billion y. o. for what we know, we can be at the dawn of intelligent life on the universe and this is scarry as hell, being truly alone, in a universe inhabited only by unicellular in a very few amount of planets separated by billions of light years

There is no theory needed. We only posess the technology to send radio signal into space for less then 100 years and technology to receive it for like 50 years. So whatever we have sent out, it has to be at close range (50 light years) if they discovered us and replied to us. That wouldnt get us very far not even within milky way. And if other alien species right on the next star would have similar technology to ours, we wouldnt be able to pick up their signal with our technology yet. Lets face it, in the 13 billion years or so, the universe is existing, we only exist for a couple of houndredthousand years and have a kulture, reading, writing for just a few thousand years (thx Egypt). We are almost like we are still "newborn" to this universe, other "intelligent life" may be a billion years old and so far developed they consider us far from being intelligent. They may have found millions of more intelligent life forms and dont care about us

Except the great filter theory isnt that. It actually is a theory that says that there is intelligent life on earth because we went through 4 or so mass extinctions that sped up the evolution process by 'filtering'. And that other planets havent been 'filtered' yet. So they havent reached intelligent life yet.
